Have you ever wondered “Should I have my commercial lease reviewed before signing?” or “Can I trademark my company name?” If so, you aren’t alone. In fact, two clients asked us these questions just this week.
The first question came from a client whose landlord expected her to review and sign her new office lease agreement in 1-2 hours. Though I doubt many people enjoy negotiating contracts, your commercial lease is one that you should 100% take the time to review given the huge effects it can have on the long-term value of your business.
After that I tackle a client’s question about trademark registration. The crux of the issue is what exactly you can and can’t trademark. In short, there are restrictions, and I delve into some of these restrictions in the video. Intellectual property rights and protections are vital to business, but it’s also an area that is complex and nuanced.
For both of these issues, it’s simply best to consult with a business attorney before making any decisions. As I note in the video, business owners might sign a new lease every 5-10 years, so it’s unlikely that they will be able to thoroughly review the agreement. Additionally, intellectual property issues are very complex and the cost of mistakes is high.
We always appreciate your questions and hope you keep watching! If you have a question about a legal issue relating your business, we would love to hear it.
